Soft Water Benefits

How Softeners Work

A water softener utilizes a positively charges ions contained in a resin bed to attract the negatively charged ions contained in minerals (the ‘hard’ component of your water). This removes the minerals and produces ‘soft’ water. Salt is used to cleanse the resin bed and regenerate the ions.

The amount of salt used is related to the frequency of the regeneration cycle of your water softener – as the system removes minerals, it needs to be flushed and ‘regenerated’ to enable it to continue to remove minerals.

Watch our video on how water softeners work.

There are alternatives to using salt – such as potassium chloride – but these systems are more expensive to maintain and operate. We do offer these ‘salt-free’ solutions, but find that for most applications, a traditional water softener that uses salt is a more economical solution.
